Melissa isn't looking for a man in her life. Not after her husband’s murder revealed he was swindling local businesses and sleeping with half the married women in town. At this point, she just wants to forget the past, forget about men for a while, and focus on her work as a high school teacher.
But it's that very focus that leads her back to Gabe. A new and troubled student enters Melissa's classroom, compelling her to meet his father—who, as it turns out, is none other than her old high school crush. Youthful crushes die hard, and Melissa's hasn't died at all; as soon as she meets Gabe again, she feels the old spark. And she's torn. Her professional ethics warn her away from her student's father, while her heart draws her closer.
Meanwhile, Melissa doesn’t know that her husband’s killer is still after his stolen money—and is sure she'll know where it is. One night, returning to her car after a high school basketball game, Melissa finds all of her tires slashed...and realizes that her husband was not only a crook and cheat, but that he's left her in serious danger.
Luckily, Gabe is available to give her a ride home that night. Melissa's racing mind is put at ease by his presence, which only makes her feel more confused about him. Though she doesn't ever want to depend on a man again, she's glad for his strong shoulder to lean on for a few minutes. The rest of him isn't bad, either.
Gabe is sure he's not looking for love, not since his wife’s death. But as a former member of an elite military organization, he knows four slashed tires mean more than a high school prank, and his protective urge is aroused. He remembers when Melissa was just a kid following him around—but she's no kid any more. He finds himself wanting more from her than he should.
As menace grows around Melissa and Gabe, their relationship deepens despite their efforts to fight it. Gabe can’t just walk away now, because his trained instincts tell him she's in much more danger than she realizes. And he's right: while they've been focused on each other, the killer has formed a plan to force Melissa to reveal the whereabouts of his money—no matter what he has to do to make her talk...
A thrilling novel of romantic suspense—and two people whose love is kindled by deadly peril.

About the Author
Mary has been a storyteller for as long as she can remember. She made up stories for the other children and created the details for their “let’s pretend” games. Sometimes the details were so real they scared the other children away.
Mary was born in Augusta, Georgia to two eighteen-year-olds. Her daddy, a young Mississippi man, was stationed at Camp Gordon and fell in love with a young girl selling flowers.
Mary graduated from Mercer University where her mama worked in the library. Mary taught language arts for 15 years, perfect for her BA in English. Her M.Ed in Counseling served her well during her years as a school counselor, and later as a teacher. Now she tutors, teaches writers, and edits—and has helped her husband photograph hundreds of weddings.
Her daughter is her cover artist now; Danielle was raised in the photography business. She doesn’t read Mary’s books. Something about TMI.
Mary likes to pluck at her readers’ heartstrings!
